Opals: 10 fascinating and unique facts

Opal is an amazing gem. Opals are more abundant than they appear on the surface. They are also stunning in their patterns and colors. These stones are perfect for watches, earrings and pendants. What exactly are opals? Ever wondered what an Opal is? You may be wondering where it came from, about its history, or its incredible metaphysical properties. Or even what the connection is to your birthstone. Angel Alchemy Jewelry has a variety of jewelry featuring these amazing stones.

Opal is a beautiful, mysterious and incredibly beautiful gemstone. In the jewelry world, its origin is a controversial topic. You might not know about the amazing properties of this iridescent stone.

History of Opal

Opallios is a Greek word that means to be aware of a change in color. Opalus, the Roman word for Opal, means gem. Ancient Greeks thought that Opal came from Zeus’ tears after he defeated the giants and gave prophecy powers.

Opal Formation

Opal is formed when heavy rains fall on dry soil. Silica rich rainfall penetrates soil cracks and dries them, leaving silica behind. Opal is found in small spaces or rock seams. It contains up to 20% water.

Virgin Rainbow

Virgin Rainbow is one of the oldest and most valuable opals on the planet. It glows at night. Opals are more vibrant when the darkness around them is darker. Purchased from South Australian Museum, Adelaide.

National Gemstone Of Australia

Australia produces the majority of Opal. The Aborigines believe that the vivid colors of Opal are a result of the rainbow and roots which brought harmony to the earth when our creator touched it. The chromatic display of precious opals is produced by millions of silica ball which refracts the light into spectral colours. These spheres have to be uniform in their size and have the proper properties to produce sufficient color for our eyes.

In the Middle Ages opals were thought to be lucky.

In the Middle Ages, it was believed that opal brought good fortune, health and luck. These stones are linked to emotion and purity. It enhances feelings and trust of the wearer. Opal stimulates the interest in arts, which promotes creativity. It is considered a healing stone by the New Age Circle. It purifies blood, and regulates the insulin.

Opal brings bad luck

In 1829, after Sir Walter Scott published Anne of Geierstein, the opal had a bad reputation. Scott’s novel shows Baroness Arnheim with an opal necklace that has supernatural powers. The baroness is killed when holy water poured over the amulet. Scott’s fame led people to start associating Opal to death and fate. In Europe, the opal market suffered a 50% decline in sales in the first year following Scott’s novel published in April 1829. This continued for twenty years.

Birthstone for October

Opal became the birthstone for the month of October in 1912. At that time, the National Gem Association held a meeting to settle an ongoing debate on which gems should represent each month. The opal has been October’s clear winner since the 15th century.

Birthstones do not just represent the month you were born, but also the signs of your zodiac. The American Gem Society has a different definition of birthstones. Birthstones are not included for every zodiac.

Various cultures in the past have associated gems with astrology. Opal is usually associated with Scorpio and Libra. It also occurs in October.

Opal Gifts

Opal has become a popular substitute for the official 14th Wedding Anniversary gem.

The Queen Of Gemstones

The ancient Romans saw it as a sign of hope and blessing. Roman scholars described our beautiful opals in 75 AD: “Some of the opals have as much drama and color as intense paintings.” Some opals have a dazzling glow of oil or sulfur. Simulate. He was surprised to find gems of ruby red, emerald and sapphire in the kaleidoscope. The opal is often referred to as the queen of gems because it has such a beautiful color.

Last but certainly Not Least

This list would not be complete without the discovery of opals on Mars! In the study of the Martian landscape, deposits of silica hydrated were discovered. It is the same substance we call Opal on Earth. This is one of the biggest scientific discoveries made in recent years. It is proof that there is or was water on Mars.
